General Dentistry

General dentistry is a term used for dentists who can treat dental issues for all ages. They are trained to help children, adults, and older patients with their unique dental needs. General dentists at 11 Dental are highly educated and experienced in both traditional and advanced techniques to diagnose and treat a variety of dental issues.

One of the advantages of using a general dentist is they get to know your family’s dental issues. Some issues are hereditary and understanding your family history helps in diagnosis and treatment. It is convenient to keep all dental records and appointments in one practice with one staff and your family dentist who you trust.

Getting to Know Your General Dentist

The first consultation is a great time to understand how procedures and the office works. You can talk to your dentist about your family’s dental needs, to staff about insurance or other financial options, and start setting up exams.
The first exam will include getting X-rays, a visual exam, and a teeth cleaning. Afterward, you or your family member will be given a treatment plan to address any dental issues or to continue with a prevention protocol.
Scheduling procedures are easy at 11 Dental. We work with you to make scheduling fit your schedule and work with you to figure out financing and out-of-pocket expenses.

How General Dentistry Differs from Specialists

General dentists can do the vast majority of procedures specialists perform. They are trained for many procedures in their dental education. Specialists have traditional dental school education but also take extended training in their specialty. General dentists will refer patients to a specialist when the problem is complex or there is a special need.

At 11 Dental, we have both general dentists and specialists so you never have to travel to different offices to meet your family’s dental needs.

We start by applying a topical anesthetic on the gum so the shot of local anesthesia is less painful. We administer the local anesthetic. You will feel a pinch but it will quickly numb the area where we will be doing the scaling and root planing.

Some general dentists perform more invasive procedures like root canals or removing impacted wisdom teeth. Whether they do these procedures or refer to a specialist depends on their experience and preference. General dentists can provide emergency care, which may include procedures like these.

General dentists will refer to specialists in cases of orthodontics, periodontics, endodontics, or for an oral surgeon. The case may involve patients with unique needs that go beyond what a general dentist can manage, may involve a complex dental issue, or may require a skill a general dentist isn’t trained to perform.
