Sedation therapy is a popular option used by patients to make them more comfortable during dental procedures. It is recommended for complex or prolonged procedures but patients can also opt for sedation if they have anxiety, dental fears, or have trouble remaining still for long periods. This may be a viable option for special needs patients, older patients with neurological issues like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, or others who have high anxiety.
At 11 Dental, we offer three types of sedation therapy. Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, oral medication, and IV sedation are all effective. The type chosen depends on age, overall health, and the type of procedure required. Children can safely use sedation therapy.

Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is the first option for many people. It is the least inducing of the choices and is safe for children. You will feel drowsy but won’t be asleep. You wake up immediately when you start breathing room air.

IV sedation is when we administer sedatives directly into the bloodstream. A twilight sleep occurs quickly and you may dose in and out, even though you are conscious. It can take several hours to fully recover afterward because you will remain drowsy.

Oral medication is a stronger sedation. With this, we give you medication to take before you arrive so you will be sleepy for your appointment. You will need someone to drive you to your appointment and home.

General anesthesia is rarely used for dental procedures. This is when you are fully asleep and is only used for complicated procedures that can take several hours.
